Getting Started

Articles provide the most current, scholarly research on a topic, and using them effectively will help you write a better research paper.

To find articles by topic, use a periodical database. Periodical databases can be either general, like ProQuest Direct, or subject specific, like Philosopher's Index.

Databases can be accessed either on campus or off campus. If off campus, you will be promted for your St. John's Central user name and password.

Choosing the Right Database

  • ProQuest Direct
ProQuest Direct is a very good all-purpose database, and includes articles on most topics. For short videos on using ProQuest Direct, click here.
  • Databases A-Z
Click here if you know the name of the database you want to use.
  • Resources by Subject
Provides resources by academic discipline, including periodical databases. Click here to find appropriate periodical databases in your discipline.
