Introduction

I am Maura C. Flannery, a professor of biology at St. John's University in New York. More information about me is available on my website.
Since 1982, I have written a monthly column for The American Biology Teacher; I've received writing awards for two of these contributions. In addition, two collections of selected articles have been published: Bitten by the Biology Bug (1991) and D'Arcy Thompson's Ice Cream and Other Essays from Biology Today (2001). I have also written articles in such publications as Leonardo, Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, and Surface Design. My articles include:
The Conservation Aesthetic and the Microbiological Aesthetic
Jellyfish on the Ceiling and Deer in the Den: The Biology of Interior Decoration
On Being a "C" Student
Images of the Cell in 20th-Century Art and Science
Agnes Arber in the 21st Century
Going Home Again
I created this page as a private space to house information about the manuscript I've written, The Delights of Biology. I have prepared a Proposal, and the Table of Contents to the right has links to each of the chapters.
The manuscript is about 105,000 words long.
