Challenged Book Challenge

 

The display, challenge and more information

Participants in the challenge are eligible for a "free your mind, read a challenged book" t-shirt, just provide some contact information on the last question of the challenge. 

We will be posting answers to these questions and hosting discussions on banned books in the library (room 305) on Thursday October 6, from 2-3 pm and Wednesday October 12, from 5-6 pm.  All readers and discussants welcome!

  • Amendments to the US Constitution
    The 1st amendment is that which covers "free speech"
  • ALA Office of Intellectual Freedom
    "Established December 1, 1967, the Office for Intellectual Freedom is charged with implementing ALA policies concerning the concept of intellectual freedom as embodied in the Library Bill of Rights, the Association’s basic policy on free access to libraries and library materials."
  • Banned Book Virtual Read-out
    "Videos of frequently censored authors Judy Blume and Lauren Myracle have recently been posted. Other highly acclaimed and/or frequently challenged authors, including Chris Crutcher, Paolo Bacigalupi, Sarah Dessen, William Joyce, Andrea Davis Pinkney, Jay Asher, Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, have also recorded videos that will be posted in coming days."
  • Mapping Censorship
    "This map is drawn from cases documented by ALA and the Kids' Right to Read Project, a collaboration of the National Coalition Against Censorship and the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression. Details are available in ALA's "Books Banned and Challenged 2007-2008; 2008-2009; 2009-2010; and 2010-2011," and the "Kids' Right to Read Project Report." "
