Off-Campus Access

All of our Libraries' subscription resources are available to you from off-campus.  If you click on one of these links and you are asked for a username and password, enter the same username and password you use to access St. John's Central.

If you are denied access to a publication from off-campus, try accessing the link again, but add the libraries' proxy-prefix (http://jerome.stjohns.edu:81/login?url=) at the very start of the URL in the address box. (NB: Do not leave any space between the proxy-prefis and the Resource URL)

Accessing resources from a company or business

Occasionally, patrons will have trouble accessing our resources from their place of place of work, even though they can access the same resources from home; If this is the case, check with your company's IT administrator.  It may be that your company has port 81 closed (this port needs to be open for access to our proxy server) or it could be that your company has other URL or firewall restrictions.

Other issues?

If you are having a problem not listed here, please take a screen shot* of your computer screen at the "point of problem" and email eservices@stjohns.edu so we have a better idea of the problems you are facing. Please also let us know what what kind of computer you are using (Lenovo X60, MAC, etc.) browser (FireFox 3.2, IE7, Chrome, etc.) and what Operating System you are using (Vista, XP, Mac Jaguar etc.)

(To take a screen shot from your Lenovo computer press Shift+PrtSc and paste (Ctrl+V) the image/s into a Word Document and attach the document to your email. If you are using a MAC use Preview File--> Take Screen Shot --> from entire screen; then File --> save as --> Jpeg   and attach tha jpeg to your email.)

Pre-Proxied Access from off-campus

When you access one of our libraries' subscription databases frrom off-campus, you should get a default proxy-screen --illustrated below-- which identifies you as a St. John's Community member.   After you enter your username and password (same as your  SJCentral username and password) you will be directed to the database

Adding Proxy information to access a citation reference

If you are denied access to a publication from off-campus, [when clicking on a link to an article on a web-page that your professor provided, or if you have citation information from an article that has a URL (like the one provided below)]  try accessing the link again, but add the libraries' proxy-prefix   http://jerome.stjohns.edu:81/login?url=  at the very start of the URL in the address box. (Note: Do not leave any space between the proxy-prefix and the Resource URL)

For example, using a sample citation:

"More than Words? Delving into the Substantive Meaning(s) of 'Social Justice' in Education"
by Connie E. North in the Review of Educational Research   Vol. 76, No. 4 (Winter, 2006), pp. 507-535
Published by: American Educational Research Association
Article Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/4124413

If you only enter the stable URL into a browser from off-campus, it my prompt you to "buy" the article, because it doesn't recognize you as a St. John's community member.  To check whether StJ community members have access to the article, enter the Proxy prefix immediately before the article URL and try again:

http://jerome.stjohns.edu:81/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/4124413

Using this proxied-URL in your browser bar, you should get the red-and-white prompt above and it will bring you to the article within JSTOR if we have electronic access.
