Mary Wollstonecraft

John Stuart Mill

Author of The Subjection of Women, 1869

Welcome!

In this course we will be exploring three aspects of feminism and politics:

(1) the political thought and philosophy that challenged prevailing gender relations from the 18th to the 21st centuries,

(2) the political movement and activism that emerged along with this writing,

(3) the public policy issues that currently engage questions of gender, including marriage and divorce laws, elder care and child care, family policy, economic development programs targeted at third world women, representation in legislatures, Islamic family law, and veiling.

This website serves as a hub for the course and for exploring its issues further.
